Sample Summary Mini-Lesson Free Essays
Dr. R: Letââ¬â¢s talk about summary. Based on the APA homework and the diagnostic rough drafts, itââ¬â¢s pretty clear some folks are still having difficulties discerning between summary and paraphrase. We will write a custom essay sample on Sample: Summary Mini-Lesson or any similar topic only for you Order Now The distinction between these two is incredibly important to grasp, as your summary in your Essay 1 must be clear and concise. Note that you should be able to summarize the main argument claims of your chosen article in a single paragraph. OK, so what is a summary? When we talk about summaries, we are usually talking about the summary of the main ideas of an entire work (although, if weââ¬â¢re focusing on a specific chapter or article in a larger work, weââ¬â¢d then be summarizing that one major component. For instance, most of us are summarizing individual articles, not the entire issue of a magazine or journal). Summary is used to ââ¬Å"state the major ideas of an entire source or part of a source [see above] in your own wordsâ⬠(Faigley, 2010, p. 20). Note that the summaries are significantly shorter than the source. Most academic guides recommend that a summary be no longer than ? the length of the original source. In other words, if you have a four page article and your summary is two pages long, thatââ¬â¢s not an effective summary. Faigley even mentions that summaries are often ââ¬Å"a paragraph or perhaps even a sentenceâ⬠(emphasis mine] (2010, p. 631). Note the key ideas in the section aboveââ¬âsummaries are short and they are in your own words. They only focus on the ââ¬Å"main points, not most of the examples or supporting materialsâ⬠(Faigley, 2010, p. 20). To put this in laymanââ¬â¢s terms for you as you check your summary work, note that this means that words like ââ¬Å"uses examplesâ⬠or ââ¬Å"uses statisticsâ⬠or ââ¬Å"Smith discusses a man in Ireland whoâ⬠are not summary appropriateââ¬âthose are areas where you are actually paraphrasing supporting data/details, not summarizing the authorââ¬â¢s main ideas. How are paraphrase and summary different? First, we tend to paraphrase specific examples or sentences. A paraphrase of a statement is often used to help clarify the ideas in that one statement, rather than to give an overview of an entire work. We most often use paraphrase after weââ¬â¢ve quoted a workââ¬âyou use that paraphrasing to help situate and show connection between the quoted material and your own ideas, for instance. As Faigley notes, ââ¬Å"[w]hen you paraphrase, you represent the idea of the source in your own words at about the same length as the originalâ⬠(emphasis mine] (Faigley, 2010, p. 631). Note that the main distinctions between summary and paraphrase are the length and the purpose of the tasks. Paraphrase is all about explaining a specific single idea at about the same length while summary is an overview of the entire piece that is much shorter. What are some strategies for effective summary? One tip is to look at the overall document. Are there headings in the source? If so, those headings should directly relate to the main ideasââ¬âthey are like little summary bullet points for the article, which means the author did some of the work for you! If there are not clearly marked sections of the source (which there often are not), youââ¬â¢re going to have to create some notes to work from. Read the article from start to finish, just reading. Then, on a second reading, read one paragraph at a time. Once you read the paragraph over, write in the margins what the main point of that paragraph is. ( A print out of the article is great for this, but if you are paperless, you can copy the article into Word and type in your paragraph notes in a different color font or use the insert comment feature to annotate the source). Once you have created that list of notesââ¬âone phrase or sentence per paragraphââ¬âyou can then take those and read through them. What main ideas are repeated that you can group together? What paragraphs seem to just list supporting examples and should be therefore excluded from your summary? Use those notes to actually develop a single paragraph of summaryââ¬âyour summary should have no more sentences in it than the source has paragraphs (and in most cases, should have fewer). Common Summary Errors 1. Including supporting details or discussing data and examples from the source. 2. Adding evaluation or commentary to the summary from your own point of view. 3. Writing the summary by focusing on retelling the entire sourceââ¬âthis is paraphrasing and can often be identified by the keywords in the long section that include things like ââ¬Å"he beginsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"he goes on to discussâ⬠andâ⬠having covered X, he moves on to Y. Those are phrases that indicate youââ¬â¢re including minor details an retelling everything, not summarizing. 4. Including quotations. 5. Incorporating additional sources (other than the thing you are summarizing). 6. Lacking signal phrasing that indicates key points. Your summary should set up the thesis/position of what is being summarized and follow with the main ideas or claims. Using signal phrasing like ââ¬Å"Smithââ¬â¢s main argument isâ⬠and ââ¬Å"one reason Smith argues X isâ⬠will help you make smoother transitions and remind the reader you are summarizing the main points only. Joses Authentic Mexican Restaurant free essay sample
As you requested on November 18, this report summarizes my analysis and recommendation regarding the customer survey results that management conducted last Friday and Saturday during the dinner crowd at Joseââ¬â¢s Authentic Mexican Restaurant. The main problem that I see is the high percentage of customers who are unsatisfied with the time it took to be served their ordered food. It is extremely important to provide excellent customer service in the restaurant industry because customers have several options and can take their business elsewhere. Joseââ¬â¢s can easily lose customers and income due to unsatisfactory food preparation times. Quality Defined Quality at Joseââ¬â¢s is defined by the five questions that were asked in the customer survey in Appendix A. Eighty-three customers who were eating at the restaurant last Friday and Saturday night were asked to answer ââ¬Å"yes or noâ⬠to each survey question. Out of all the questions, more people answered ââ¬Å"noâ⬠to being served at a reasonable time than the other questions. We will write a custom essay sample on Joses Authentic Mexican Restaurant or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Thirty percent of the customers thought that they waited too long for their food, which demonstrates that the largest concern over quality for the restaurant is the time the customers expected their food. Just under half (49%) of the total ââ¬Å"noââ¬â¢sâ⬠in the survey can be connected to this question. If customers are unsatisfied with the time it takes to get their food, they will likely answer that their experience was not worth the cost. The reason why it is important for customers to be satisfied with the time it takes to receive their food is because they have the option to go elsewhere. There are several other restaurants in the area that can provide customers with what they want. Without customers buying Joseââ¬â¢s food, the restaurant will not stay in business because their income depends on the purchase of their food. Recommendation It is clear to me that the main two complaints if resolved, would cover most of the process failure problems at Joseââ¬â¢s. Training the current cook, as well as hiring another cook would improve the food preparation process (Krajewski, Ritzman Malhotra, 2013). By adding another cook on Friday and Saturday only, food could be prepared faster, and the waiters could deliver it closer to the twelve minutes it takes on Sunday through Thursday to make the meals. Also, with more than one cook, the waiters would not feel obligated to help fetch food stocks from the refrigerator or storage area and help prepare the food. The waiters need to focus on the customers and reading their dynamics, behavior, and body language in order to render specific service dependent upon their mood (Oââ¬â¢Connell, 2006). The customers are the main priority at Joseââ¬â¢s because they provide income to pay the employees and order the food stocks. If the cooks are complaining about the quality of the food stock, they will now have the time to address the problem. In conclusion, hiring another cook is the best solution for improving the customerââ¬â¢s responses to the survey and as a result increasing satisfaction with the waiters and their tips. References

Between vs. Among
Between vs. Among Between vs. Among Between vs. Among By Maeve Maddox The preposition between is from an Old English word related to the word two. It denotes a position between two things: The guard stood between the door and the street. Just between you and me, Im surprised that a graduate of Yale wouldnt speak better English. The preposition among derives from an Old English word meaning to mix or to mingle. Use among when speaking about more than two things: We wandered among the poppies, looking for the road to Oz. Lets keep this information among ourselves. A common error is to use between where among is more appropriate: I was one of eight brothers. Our parents never made any difference between us. Better: Our parents never made any difference among us. Benefits of Canadas Plastic Currency
Benefits of Canadas Plastic Currency Canada is trading in its paper currency for plastic. No, not credit cards, actual plastic money. Sometime late in 2011, the Bank of Canada replaced the nations traditional cotton-and-paper bank notes with currency made from a synthetic polymer. Canada purchases its plastic money from a company in Australia, one of nearly two dozen countries where a plastic currency is already in circulation. New Imagery for New Currency The first polymer-made currency released was the $100 bill, released in 2011 and adorned by the 8th Prime Minister Sir Robert Borden. The new $50 and $20 bills followed in 2012, the latter featuring Queen Elizabeth II. The $10 and $5 bills were released in 2013. Beyond the figurehead, the bills feature a number of interesting design elements. These include an astronaut, the research icebreaker ship CCGS Amundsen, and the word Arctic spelled out in Inuktitut, an indigenous language. Scientific research and innovation are especially well represented on the $100 bill, with depictions of a researcher sitting at a microscope, a vial of insulin, a DNA strand, and an electrocardiogram printout, commemorating the invention of the pacemaker. Practical Benefits of Plastic Currency Plastic money lasts anywhere from two to five times longer than paper money and performs better in vending machines. And, unlike paper currency, plastic money doesnt shed tiny bits of ink and dust that can disable ATMs by confusing their optical readers. Polymer bills are much more complicated to counterfeit. They include a number of security features including difficult-to-copy transparent windows, hidden numbers, metallic holograms, and text printed in a minuscule font. Plastic money also stays cleaner and becomes less grubby than paper money, because the non-porous surface doesnt absorb perspiration, body oils, or liquids. In fact, the plastic money is virtually waterproof, so the bills wont be ruined if they are left in a pocket by mistake and end up in the washing machine. Actually, plastic money can take a lot of abuse. You can bend and twist plastic currency without damaging it. The new plastic money is also less likely to spread disease because its harder for bacteria to cling to the slick, non-absorbent surface. Canada will also pay less for its new plastic money. While the plastic bank notes cost more to print than their paper equivalents, their longer life means Canada will end up printing far fewer bills and save a substantial amount of, well, money in the long run. Environmental Benefits All in all, it looks like plastic money is good for the government and good for consumers. Even the environment could end up cashing in on the trend toward plastic currency. It turns out plastic money can be recycled and used to manufacture other plastic products such as compost bins and plumbing fixtures. A life-cycle assessment commissioned by the Bank of Canada determined that over their entire life cycle, the polymer bills are responsible for 32% fewer greenhouse gas emissions, and 30% reduction in energy need. Yet, the benefits of recycling are not exclusive to plastic money. For the past several years, various companies have been recycling worn-out paper currency and using the recycled material in products ranging from pencils and coffee mugs to, ironicallyà andà appropriately, piggy banks.

International Student Support Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 5000 words
International Student Support - Essay Example This research demonstrated that students from United Arab Emirates had little choice or input in the choice of course and college, and this affected the ability to motivate themselves for the course. Some of these students probably have no interest in learning English, and the research shows that there is a preference to learn more practical subjects such as engineering as they would be immediately useful in their home country. . The students from the United Arab Emirates are also restricted by their respective armies in terms of movement, and this restricts their ability to integrate with other students. For instance, the other part-time students will have experienced similar processes from pre-arrival to induction and this process would have allowed them to construct relationships. The part-time students are also able to work, and this experience increases their use of the English language as they are using it in the practical context. Therefore, the lack of integration and choice is severely hampering the ability of the UAE students to access the college's service support. Table of Contents Introduction The research on which this report is based concentrates on international students from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), who are currently enrolled on programmes that focus on teaching the English Language. This group has been selected because of the unique enrolment process they undertake. They also constitute a significant proportion of full-time English language students at Salisbury College. Most of these students are this college as it has been chosen by the military organisation they represent, and therefore they have had no choice in the selection. Salisbury College is one of twelve colleges that receive army personnel for technical training through a private army contract. These students' first language is Arabic and they were selected in their respective states for tuition at this college. As the choice to attend Salisbury College was not an individual choice, these students have not gone through the normal application route, which would have involved contact with Student Services, which would have helped them arrange their visas, police registration and other details. Instead this has all been centrally, and all they had to do was to get on a plane and attend lessons. As a result of the omission of this important step, these students are presenting with a different set of issues when compared to other international students. For instance, they feel isolated because their English is noticeably poorer than other students, and this probably stems from the lack of integration and socialising which would have been arranged by the college's Student Services. They feel no arrangements have been made to involve them with
